Long ago there was a mighty battle in the animal kingdom between the rats and the birds. The battle was very hard fought and when the rats saw that the birds were starting to win, they asked their cousins the bats for help fighting the birds from the sky.
As you would expect, the bats were happy to help their cousins and they fought together for a while. When the bats realised that the birds were still winning, however, they decided to switch sides. With two flying attackers, the rats quickly surrendered to the birds.
With the battle over, the bats went to celebrate with the birds in the trees but the birds beat them and drove them away. They were disgusted by the way the bats turned against their cousins and asked them never to show their face again.
Bruised and sore, the bats went to their cousins to complain about the way they were treated by the birds. However, the rats who were upset with the bats for their betrayal, also attacked the bats and drove them away from the land.
Sad that everyone was upset with them and ashamed of their actions during the battle, the bats retreated to a nearby cave. To this day most bats live in caves and only come out at night for fear of being seen by the birds and the rats.
